1. About Truc Lam  Pagoda Dalat

History of Dalat Truc Lam Buddhist Monastery

At midnight of a day in 1986, Venerable Thich Thanh Tu dreamed that he was holding a phoenix and flying up. After pondering, he came up with Dalat, as he considered it as an ideal place which has favourable climate, enchanting scenery, tranquil ambiance for monks and nuns to practice and get the big achievement on practicing the Buddha’s teaching. 

Then, he sketched the panorama of the monastery and looked for a best spot to construct it. When he visited Tuyen Lam Lake, he was satisfied with its ambiance and surroundings. The Buddhists tried to accommodate with his suggestion and asked for permission to use land. 

Truc Lam Pagoda Dalat was designed by Mr. Vu Xuan Hung and Tran Duc Loc with the involvement of the noted architect named Ngo Viet Thu, who designed Ho Chi Minh City’s Independence Palace. On April 8, 1993, Truc Lam Pagoda was officially started to construct. On February 8, 1994, it was completed and organized the first meditation course.

Dalat Truc Lam Buddhist Monastery Overview

Truc Lam Zen Monastery is one of the three largest Zen monasteries in Vietnam belonging to the Truc Lam Yen Tu lineage with an area of up to 30 hectares. From the monastery it is about 5 km to Da Lat city center. Both sides of the road leading to the Zen Monastery are surrounded by vast pine forests.

Located on a high hill surrounded by vast pine forests, opposite to the Zen Monastery is Tuyen Lam Lake, Truc Lam Pagoda Dalat possesses the most charming and poetic scenery of the foggy Da Lat City. Fresh air, cool weather and quiet atmosphere, all of that makes visitors nostalgic.

If visitors are visiting Tuyen Lam Lake, they can walk up 140 stone steps, passing a triple gate to visit the main hall.

In the monastery, there is also an extremely vibrant flower garden containing many types of precious flowers such as: bird of paradise, firecrackers, fumigant, etc. Thanks to these flowers, the monastery becomes much more colorful and beautiful.

 

Leaving the flower garden, visitors go below the pagoda to Tinh Tam Lake, which raises many types of ornamental turtles, the water is always clear all year round, and there are many stone benches and huts around for visitors to take a rest.

Truc Lam Zen Monastery in Da Lat includes 4 main areas: the Abbot’s Venerable Area, the Monks’ Inside Area, the Nuns’ Inside Area and the Outside Area. Most of the architecture here uses wood materials and deep brown tone, creating a classic and traditional beauty and ambiance.

The main hall of Truc Lam Buddhist Monastery has an area of 192 m2 inside, which is considered as the most sacred place at the monastery. There is a two-meter tall Buddha Shakyamuni with his right hand holding a lotus flower in the middle. On the left side, there is a statue of Manjushri Buddha while a statue of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva is placed on the right side.

Truc Lam Zen Monastery is located on Truc Lam Yen Tu Street, Ward 3, Da Lat City, Lam Dong Province. It’s about 7 km from Da Lat city center. The way to get here is quite easy so it is suitable for all means of travel from motorbikes, cars to buses,… On the trip, you will have the opportunity to see the vast pine forests, cool green cover and full view of Tuyen Lam Lake with the most enchanting and stunning scenery.

You can get to Truc Lam Zen Monastery Dalat by two ways: by land or by cable car:

Travel by land

Depart from Da Lat market >> Tung Mau Lake >> April 3 >> through Prenn Pass >> Highway 20 >> go straight to Truc Lam Zen Monastery.

Travel by cable car

Buy tickets on Robin Hill then move to the monastery in about 15 minutes. Taking the cable car, visitors will have the opportunity to see breathtaking natural scenery from above. This means of transport is not suitable for tourists who are afraid of heights.

Currently, the ticket price for the cable car from Robin Hill to Truc Lam Buddhist Pagoda is:

  • Two-way cable car ticket: 100,000 VND for an adult and 70,000 VND for a child (height under 1m2).
  • One-way cable car ticket: 80,000 VND for an adult and 60,000 VND for a child (height under 1m2).

  • The entrance to Tuyen Lam Lake has 140 steps. If there are elderly or poor-health people in the group, you should not go there.
  • Your motorbikes are kept for free.
  • No trading or gathering inside the monastery. 
  • Dress discreetly: short pants, short skirts and revealing clothes are not allowed.
  • At the main hall, people must remove their shoes when making pilgrimages and worshiping Buddha. 
  • Photography is not allowed inside the main hall.
  • Some areas are prohibited for tourists to visit, such as the monks’ and nuns’ inner areas.
